How this comparison was made

We make neoo, so read this page with that in mind. Monica was not tested hands-on. Everything said about it comes from its website and pricing page, checked on 16 September 2026. Everything said about neoo was re-checked against the app on 18 October 2026, including what it does not do. Prices and features change, so check both before you decide.

Two different jobs

Monica is a personal CRM in the fullest sense of the phrase. It gives you a record for each person and a structure to fill it with: relationships between them, notes, journal entries, activities, reminders, and custom fields for the details a sales CRM would never think to ask for. Its own description of the problem is worth repeating — remembering the people in your life without scrolling through six messaging apps. It has been open source since the beginning, and you can run the whole thing on your own server.

neoo starts one step earlier, at the conversation. You talk to someone, and afterwards you speak for half a minute — or type, if speaking is awkward. neoo turns that into the people, places and organisations you mentioned and the facts about them, writes a short summary, and files each fact under the person it belongs to. When a name could mean two different people, it asks which one you meant, and remembers your answer. Every fact keeps a link back to the recording, so you can play the moment you learned it.

Put simply: Monica gives you somewhere to put what you know. neoo is about getting it there in the first place.

Where Monica is clearly ahead

  • It models how people are connected — families, partners, friendships, coworkers. neoo does not do this at all.
  • Reminders. Monica will tell you to call your mother. neoo has no reminders.
  • You can own the whole thing. Open source, self-hostable, your server, your database. neoo offers nothing like it.
  • It is finished, and you can use it today — with a 30-day trial that needs no credit card. neoo is in beta, with its first testers.
  • Breadth. Journal entries, activities, gifts, debts, custom fields. neoo does one thing.

Where neoo is different

  • Capture is built around speaking right after a conversation, not around filling in a record.
  • The facts come out of what you said. You do not sort anything into fields.
  • It does not quietly pick between two people with similar names. It asks, and learns the answer.
  • Every fact is traceable: open it and play the recording it came from.

That last point is the one worth weighing. In Monica, what you know is what you remembered to type. In neoo, it is what you said, with the recording still attached.

Price

Monica: the hosted version is $9 a month or $90 a year, with unlimited contacts and a 30-day trial that needs no credit card during the trial. Self-hosting costs nothing from Monica, though your hosting provider may still charge you, and you take on the server, updates, backups and security patches yourself.

neoo: there is nothing to pay during the beta, and no way to pay yet. The plan for afterwards is that neoo stays free to use and you pay a fee for usage. The details are not set.

Which one fits

If you want a permanent, structured home for everything you know about the people in your life — and especially if you want to host it yourself and never hand that data to anyone — Monica does that job, and neoo does not.

If the thing that keeps failing is the typing itself, and what you lose is what someone told you three weeks ago, that is the job neoo is built for.

They do not exclude each other. Monica can hold the record; neoo is about the thirty seconds after the conversation, which is where most systems quietly fail.

Frequently asked questions

Can I self-host neoo the way I can self-host Monica?

No. neoo is a hosted web app and is not open source. If running it on your own server matters to you, Monica is the one that does that.

Does neoo show how people are connected to each other?

Partly. When a note says how people are related, neoo keeps it: family is recorded as family, and under a person’s name it shows whom you know them through, like “via Sylvi”. These connections come from what you say in your notes, and there is no map of your network. Monica lets you set relationships between contacts directly.

Can I move my Monica data into neoo?

No. neoo has no import of any kind today. People appear in neoo when you mention them in a note.
